Moreton Bay Regional Council Bushcare

I became a Bushcare and Environmental Conservation Volunteer with Land for Wildlife and the Moreton Bay Regional Council in 2017, and remained volunteering with them until 2021.

Woorim Beach Bushcare

The days at Woorim Beach Bushcare would often be spent planting native species along the dunes, such as casuarina trees, and spinifex endemic to the area.

Other times I would spend taking three for the sea, especially after storms – which was a great way for the public to join in and do their bit picking up rubbish as they walk along the beach. It always makes me feel proud when I inspire people to make choices for the environment.

Buckley’s Hole Bushcare

Every once in a while I would spend a couple of hours with other fellow volunteers removing pests from Buckleys Hole Conservation Park, a beautiful spot for birdwatching or throwing a line in.

The main targets would include gloriosa lillies (Gloriosa superba) and coral creeper (Barleria repens), although there was usually some exotic passiflora and asparagus fern that would also require removal.

The differences between the start of the session and the end were quite visible, and it was always great to make way for the native plants.

Sometimes I would also come across the invasive cane toads, which I would remove for disposing of as well.

Warrick Spencer Garden

Bushcare at the Warrick Spencer Garden included removing weeds to make way for native plants.
